The Ningxia Institute of Engineering and Technology Development Strategy has announced that the project Strategic Study on Building a New-Type Power System in Ningxia has been approved as a major strategic research and advisory initiative for 2025 by the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

The study will address key challenges such as ensuring a reliable power supply, enabling high-level integration of renewable energy, and maintaining the safe and stable operation of the power system. Research will focus on three main areas:

Developing a multi-dimensional evaluation framework to assess the current progress in building a new-type power system in Ningxia;

Analyzing the technical and systemic challenges of high renewable energy penetration, with a focus on supply security and energy absorption;

Offering forward-looking policy and technical recommendations for accelerating the construction of Ningxia’s new-type power system through coordinated efforts across generation, grid infrastructure, demand-side management, storage, technology, market mechanisms, and regulation.

As China’s first comprehensive renewable energy demonstration zone, Ningxia is actively advancing the construction of a new-type power system. By 2030, the region aims to surpass 100 million kilowatts in installed renewable capacity, which would account for over 70% of its total generation capacity.

To support this vision, the Ningxia Institute developed a project application guide focused on the integration of scientific and industrial innovation in key sectors. It solicited proposals in 19 thematic areas across nine major fields, receiving 52 submissions from both inside and outside the region. After two rounds of expert reviews by academicians, three projects—including the Ningxia power system study—were selected for inclusion in the national support program.
