Guangdong Power Grid Corporation has officially put into operation a new grid operation control system (OCS), marking the launch of China’s largest fully domestically developed provincial-level power grid control platform. The system is built entirely with Chinese-made components—including CPU chips, operating systems, databases, and middleware—achieving full independence in both hardware and software.
China's existing grid control systems have long relied on imported core technologies, posing “chokepoint” risks, high operating costs, and uncertainties. To tackle this, Guangdong Power Grid launched a major initiative in 2020 to develop key technologies for an autonomous system. The team overcame challenges such as equipment compatibility, real-time monitoring, and system integration. It also developed an intelligent verification tool to align data from old and new systems, helping to mitigate security risks in large-scale energy control deployments.
The new OCS system serves as the unified platform for managing electricity generation, transmission, and consumption across Guangdong Province and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. As the core system for China’s largest provincial power grid, it has passed evaluations for 95 critical indicators and is now running as the primary control system. It ensures zero-error dispatching and uninterrupted operation of the electricity spot market, while improving overall system stability and efficiency.
“The system’s automatic generation control function enables flexible regulation of wind and solar energy across Guangdong, both onshore and offshore,” said Guo Wenxin, Senior Manager at the grid’s Automation Department. “With over 100,000 control decisions made daily, the system optimizes renewable energy scheduling in both time and space, ensuring precise and efficient integration into the grid.”
