China’s total electricity consumption reached 809.6 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in May, up 4.4% year-on-year, according to data released Thursday by the National Energy Administration (NEA).
By sector, power consumption in the primary industry (mainly agriculture) rose 8.4% year-on-year to 11.9 billion kWh. The secondary industry (including manufacturing and construction) consumed 541.4 billion kWh, up 2.1%. Consumption in the tertiary industry (services) increased 9.4% to 155 billion kWh. Residential electricity use climbed 9.6% to 101.3 billion kWh.
In the first five months of the year, nationwide electricity consumption totaled 3.97 trillion kWh, marking a 3.4% increase from the same period last year. Power generation by industrial enterprises above the designated size reached 3.73 trillion kWh. Sector-wise, electricity consumption in the primary industry rose 9.6% to 54.3 billion kWh in the January–May period. The secondary industry used 2.59 trillion kWh, up 2.2%; the tertiary industry consumed 740.6 billion kWh, a 6.8% increase; and residential consumption reached 580.2 billion kWh, up 3.7% year-on-year.
