What is the Difference Between DBM and CCM

12 Oct.,2023

DBM and CCM are acronyms for Dead Burned Magnesia and Calcined Caustic Magnesia. They are both types of magnesia but differ in their production and resulting properties. They are also used in different contexts.

What is Dead Burned Magnesia (DBM)?

Dead Burned Magnesia is a high-temperature processed type of magnesium carbonate. To obtain DBM, magnesite ore is heated at extremely high temperatures, usually between 1,800 and 2,000 degrees Celcius in a rotary kiln.

DBM is popularly known for its high purity and excellent refractory properties. With a dense crystal structure, DBM exhibits great resistance to high temperature and corrosion. Because of these properties, Dead Burned Magnesia is widely used in a wide range of industries, including ceramics and refractories.

What is Calcined Caustic Magnesia (CCM)?

Calcined Caustic Magnesia is a chemical compound derived from the mineral magnesite through calcination. The process of obtaining CCM involves heating the mineral at relatively lower temperatures to remove impurities and carbon dioxide.

CCM has a high melting point and is insoluble in water. This compound exhibits many great properties that make it suitable for various industries. The most valuable properties include chemical stability, environmental remediation, and refractory properties. CCM has many applications, including agricultural applications.

The Difference Between DBM And CCM

Production Process

The most significant difference between DBM and CCM lies in their production processes. DBM is manufactured by heating magnesium hydroxide or magnesite at very high temperatures, which completely removes carbon dioxide and water, producing a highly refractory material.

On the other hand, CCM is produced by heating magnesite at relatively lower temperatures, typically between 700 and 1000 degrees Celsius in a rotary kiln. This process aims to remove excess water and carbon dioxide, creating a material with intermediate reactivity.

Physical Properties

DBM has a thick and crystalline structure with a bulk density and low porosity. It is available in a fair-white to grayish-white color. Conversely, CCM has a relatively lower bulk density with a high porosity than Dead Burned Magnesia. Calcined Caustic Magnesia may have a more granular texture and can be light brown/gray.

Reactivity

Dead Burned Magnesia is a highly refractory compound that exhibits low reactivity. With a high melting point and resistance to heat, DBM is ideal for applications in the cement, glass, and steel industries.

Calcined Caustic Magnesia has a high reactivity compared to DBM. It exhibits moderate refractoriness and can interact with water to form magnesium hydroxide. It is suitable in applications where its high reactivity is required, such as in agriculture.
