Which pump should I use?

When it comes to delivering concrete to a site, there are two main concrete pumping methods. While both methods are designed to transport concrete efficiently and effectively, there are significant differences between the two approaches. Which concrete pump should be used for what type of project will depend on these differences.

Line pumps are a more traditional method for delivering concrete to smaller sites, domestic sites or sites with smaller access. These pumps consist of a hopper that feeds the concrete through hoses to its desired location. Our line pumps can reach up to 200m away from the hopper and can go around corners using our flexihose.

Main benefits of line pumps

  • Line can be moved easily from one section to another
  • Relatively small and can access tighter spaces
  • Standard length is cheaper than using a Boom Pump

Also known as truck-mounted pumps, concrete boom pumps consist of a large boom which can be extended and positioned to reach almost any location on a construction site. These are typically used for larger sites or for sites where access is only possible over a non-movable object, such as a house or wall.

We have two sizes of boom pumps, a 24m boom and a 36m boom pump. A 24m boom pump will usually be used on domestic projects, however, if concrete is needed to pump into a high building or over a several story standing, the 36m boom pump would be better. Due to the nature of the weight and height of the booms, the vehicle needs to have the room to have the stabilisers correctly placed out to either side of the vehicle.

Main benefits of concrete boom pumps

  • The versatility of the truck and boom allows it to reach even the most difficult of sites
  • They can deliver concrete quickly, averaging a full load of concrete through the pump in 10-15minutes
  • The pump operator sets the pump up completely meaning no labour is required for the pump

Conclusion

In conclusion, concrete line pumps and boom pumps are both effective methods for delivering concrete to a construction site. While line pumps are more flexible and suited for smaller projects, boom pumps are more versatile and ideal for larger-scale construction projects. Ultimately, the choice between the two methods will depend on the specific needs of the construction project, including the size of the project, the location of the pour site and the budget available. By understanding the differences, you can make an informed decision and choose the best method to suit your needs.
