What does it mean if your pump is self-priming?

21 Aug.,2023

Self-priming pumps are a specific type of liquid pump. They are designed for fluid movement and transfer which results in increased efficiencies in many pumping applications.

How self-priming pumps work

Self-priming pumps are specifically engineered centrifugal pumps. These pumps are designed with an external casing that ‘floods’ the inner pump. When the pump is turned on, the impeller rotates, creating a low-pressure area. The liquid inside is then pushed up the suction pump by atmospheric pressure, which forces the air through the pump. As the air and water mixes, the liquid discharges from the casing, igniting the flow rates.

When would you use a self-priming pump?

Self-priming centrifugal pumps can be applied in many applications due to their versatility; they are suitable for some of the harshest applications including:

  • water supply and treatment
  • general industry and manufacturing use
  • chemical and mining use
  • food and beverage
  • agriculture and irrigation

Why consider a self-priming pump?

Self-priming pumps can be mounted above the liquid source at ground level, therefore, less infrastructure and equipment is required during setup. Centrifugal, Helical Rotor and Magnetic Drive Pumps are self-priming, and multi-industry ready.
