Based on Ports
A double port valve features two ports allowing fluid to enter or leave, it has two positions, open to allow flow and closed to stop the flow. A double port valve has one path, for flow to pass through it. These ports are usually at the parallel ends of the valve body; hence, the plugs are rotated to a 1/4th of a full turn in order to change from the open to the closed positions.
This type of valve is used to divert the flow or combine the flow. In a 3 way plug valve, the flow from one port can be directed to either the 2nd or 3rd port. Also, it can be designed in such way to connect all the 3 ports together, or shift flow alternatively between the ports.
