Aerial Lift Basics: The Boom Lift

Where Are Boom Lifts Used?

Boom lifts are often used outdoor during construction, forestry projects, mining, and telephone/electrical repair. Boom lifts are perfect for outdoor projects because of their ability to reach heights, stability, and maneuverability.

Boom lift Safety

Anyone operating a boom lift must be licensed to do so. Without proper training or following safety procedures can result in serious injuries or death. When working at heights, it’s important to remember that falls are one of OSHA’s fatal four accidents in construction; therefore, it’s mandatory to operate in safe environments and wear a safety harness.

Falling from a Boom Lift
OSHA has different requirements for boom lifts than other aerial lifts like scissor lifts because of the high risk of operators being ejected from the platform while traveling over uneven surfaces. All occupants must always wear a safety harness and attach their lanyards to the appropriate anchor on the platform. Occupants should stand firmly on the platform and never sit or climb on the edge of the guardrails. Never use other devices like ladders or planks while on the boom’s platform.

Boom Lift Tipping Hazard
Boom lifts are engineered to be very stable, but while working at heights they can become top-heavy, increasing the risk of tipping. It’s important to remember that these machines are not impossible to tip despite their incredible design. You need to inspect the jobsite to ensure the ground is solid throughout the entire project.  All boom lifts have a max weight and range that must never be exceeded.
