One of the oldest and biggest industries in the world, the apparel and textile industry in Sri Lanka is a flourishing market. There are absolutely no shortages of variety when it comes to fabrics and even today, specialized textile research is being conducted on a global scale to develop and assess fabric that is of better quality. Ranging from pretty vintage fabrics to muted shades, each fabric has it own unique benefits. With the rise in the demand for high quality woven greige (more often known as grey) fabrics, quality fabric suppliers in Sri Lanka have stepped up to invest in the latest machinery and resources to produce a perfect final product that is excellent in quality.

What is woven grey/greige fabric?

Popularly known as grey, greige fabric is generally mistaken for a colour rather than a fabric. Greige is an unfinished knitted or woven fabric that has not yet gone under the process of bleach, dye or print. Used as a base to make quality clothing and upholstery, greige is typically woven from cotton or polyester. However, as greige fabric is defined as unfinished woven fabric, there are also many other types such as rayon and nylon fabrics.

An important property of greige fabric is that it is unwashed as a result of which it has not shrunk. Due to this reason, greige fabrics generally shrink by about 15% after washing and the weaving becomes tighter and closer afterwards resulting in higher elasticity.

Asia is a huge supplier of greige fabrics, and with the Sri Lankan textile industry stepping into the limelight as quality apparel manufacturers, greige fabric, in addition to numerous other excellent materials are manufactured to perfection.

The steps in which greige woven fabrics are produced

Step 1: Spinning

The fiber is carefully spun in order to prepare the yarns of threads. The fiber is first cleaned and then the carding is done and this helps in removing any unwanted foreign particles from the fiber. Thereafter, it is converted to a rope like structure, known as sliver. The slivers are then spun with the help of mechanisms such as ring spinning and open-end spinning.

Step 2: Warp preparation

Before the yarns are woven into fabrics, it has to be prepared for weaving. The warp yarns are initially prepared on a warping machine and thereafter, it passes through a size solution in order to make the yarns stronger and keep it prepared for abrasions while weaving. Finally, the yarns are drawn into heddles according to the design of the fabric.

Step 3: Weaving

This is the last step in the process where the warp and weft yarn are interlaced in a criss-cross pattern. The weft yarn is taken over and across the warp yarn with the help of air with air jet looms.

The apparel manufacturing process is a very carefully detailed procedure so that the fabrics are maintained, preserved and ready for export or further processing. As one of the leading apparel suppliers in Sri Lanka, Creative Textile Mill (Pvt) Ltd provides the best finished fabrics in Sri Lanka.
