Why does the automatic start-stop system need a special battery?

JUN.17,2021

Each start-up process is related to a large amount of energy from the car battery. The battery must be in a very good condition to reliably provide high starting current. Especially modern vehicles equipped with automatic start-stop system, the engine will be shut down many times during driving. During these stages, the battery continues to provide energy for all electrical equipment. The traditional start-up battery (SLI) is not designed for this charging output (that is, continuous discharge and charging).

Only batteries with automatic start-stop system can meet these demands and withstand the pressure.

What is automatic start-stop system?

The start-stop battery is also known as “idle start-stop” and “micro-hybrid”, which saves fuel by automatically turning off the engine when the vehicle is paused, for example, when the car stops at a red light.

Ordinary car batteries only provide current to the starter motor to enable it to rotate, while modern stop-start batteries can be discharged and charged multiple times. This means that even if the engine is stopped and the battery is idle, the start-stop battery is still powering the auxiliary systems (lights, air conditioning, and music). There is also something called a brake regeneration system, which stores energy when the brake is used so that it can be reused in the future.

There are two types of start-stop batteries, EFB and AGM

EFB battery-Enhanced flooded battery (EFB) can also be used in cars with start-stop technology. It is considered to be an entry-level battery for cars using this technology. EFBs are wet-filled, similar to standard flooded batteries, but there are some differences that make these batteries have enhanced cycle capacity and charge acceptance. This means that the battery recovers faster because its application needs to handle heavy, cycle, start-stop applications.

The EFB battery must be replaced with another EFB battery or your other alternative stop-start battery, namely AGM car battery. “Ordinary car batteries cannot replace start-stop batteries.

AGM Batteries-Absorbent glass mat car batteries are designed for larger, more demanding start-stop cars that have more complex built-in technology than typical entry-level cars. These are all to reduce fuel consumption. Typically, the fuel efficiency of your AGM battery will increase by 8%, and your carbon dioxide emissions will also be reduced by 8%.

Similar to EFB batteries, AGM batteries must be replaced with similar batteries.

The generator charges the starter battery while driving

In a car that is not equipped with an automatic start-stop system, the start-up process is usually a one-time event. During driving, the generator provides power for the entertainment system, navigation equipment and other electrical equipment. Therefore, when the generator is working, the starting battery will not discharge during driving.

The start-stop battery has a double load

For cars with start-stop technology, the situation is different. During the journey through town, the battery will go through a series of start and stop cycles. If the car stops at a traffic light when the engine is stopped, electrical appliances such as lights, windshield wipers, radios or monitors still require electricity. Increase the load by continuously discharging and charging.

Especially short trips pose challenges to batteries. Especially in the case of old batteries and in winter, the battery’s charge acceptance will decrease, so adequate charging cannot be guaranteed during short trips. This causes the battery to gradually discharge, so that at some point, the battery no longer has enough energy to start the engine. Due to the special technology, the internal resistance of the AGM battery during the entire life cycle is much lower than that of the traditional battery, so it can ensure sufficient charging acceptance for a long time, and better cope with short-distance trips with many start and stop stages.

The advantages of EFB battery

1) It is more than twice the partial state of charge and deep cycle performance of traditional batteries.

2) Support a large number of engine start and extend engine shutdown time.

3) Compared with the traditional flooded battery, it has improved charging acceptance.

4) A design that can improve thermal stability for use in engine compartments and hot climates.

5) Very suitable for start-stop vehicle technology without regenerative braking technology and vehicles with higher energy requirements than normal, whether it means a stricter driving plan or the installation of multiple accessories and equipment.

The advantages of AGM battery

1) AGM produces higher ampere power output for calcium batteries of the same size, meeting the increasing demands of automotive electronics and technology.

2) AGM is more suitable for modern car charging systems.

3) Dual-purpose AGMs can be used as starting batteries and accessory batteries, so they can support a variety of new accessories and automotive technologies.

4) Deep-cycle AGMs are safer to be installed in the passenger compartment of the vehicle because they are sealed and will not produce harmful smoke or gas.

5) Because the AGM is completely sealed, it is also maintenance-free.

Interesting facts about automatic start-stop system technology

The automatic start-stop system requires batteries with modern technology, because the design of ordinary starter batteries cannot meet the higher requirements of these vehicles.

The electrical system architecture of modern cars requires compatible battery technology to operate normally and reliably. For this reason, in many vehicles, new batteries must be “registered”-the battery management system (BMS) must know which type of battery is installed in the vehicle to achieve its full potential. If an incorrect battery is installed in the vehicle or not registered correctly, this may cause the battery to age prematurely and fail again.

Therefore, vehicles equipped with automatic start-stop system can only install EFB or AGM batteries. If an AGM battery is already installed in the vehicle, it must always be replaced with another AGM battery.
